Know Your Kind of Wine Today

The right combination between food and wine is a source of ultimate bliss for every connoisseur. Both wine and food can benefit from the right pairing. The right wine can accentuate unexpected gastronomical aspects of food and vice versa, wine can shine in a new light when accompanied by the right dish. In order to savor the splendor of such combinations, one does not need to frequent expensive restaurants and buy overpriced wines. Rather, when combining food and wine it is one???s intuition and curiosity that are of paramount importance.
It is a pleasure to the palate and it teases the senses when you combine fine dining with a glass of good wine. White wine is excellent when you are dining on fish or chicken, while red wine goes perfectly with red meat dishes.

You might be confused when it comes to classifying the kinds of wine manufactured by vintners.

Wine-makers use the word ???varietal??? to refer to the type of wine made, as there are many variants to choose from.

France and Italy are amoung the leading countries when it comes to exporting wine all over the world. In the United States, you can find great wine producers in California.

Wines can be named according to the wine-maker, the vintage - which indicates the year when the grapes were grown - and the place where the wines were made.

However, most wine names are derived from the grape they are made from.

Here???s a quick look at the general types of wines that you can choose from to suit your taste:

1. Sparkling wine

This is more popularly known as champagne. Sparkling wine takes the form of a bubbly clear liquid which is most often used to signify a celebration.
They are further divided into different types. There is a type of sparkling wine which is very dry and they are light and a bit sweet when tasted. There are champagnes made from white or red grapes, and they are more popularly known as Blanc de Blancs.

2. Aperitif

These are wines drank as an appetizer before the actual meal. Vermouth and dry sherry are a couple of examples of an aperitif.

3. Red wines

Red dinner wines are best served with red meat dishes or pasta. Cabernet Sauvignon is a popular red wine brand.

4. Rose dinner wine

This is related to the red wine variety and is also known as ???blush wine??? or pink wine. It has a lighter color and a sweeter flavor than the regular red wine.

5. White wine

White wine best complements fish or chicken meal. It brings out the natural aroma of food and further enhances flavor when served chilled. Chablis and Chardonnay are examples of white wines.

6. Table wine

Table wines can be red, white or pink wine which have no more than 14% alcohol content.

7. Dessert wine

Sweet sherry is an example of a dessert wine which is mostly of the sweet variety.

8. Cooking wine

Cooking wine is not intended for drinking because they contain salt.

From all these wine types and more ??" you get to take your pick of which bottle you would like to take home, sip and enjoy. Join Wine Tasting Party.

The Best Articles on Chianti Region

Ancient Biblical Grape Juice And Wine Drinkers, Raisin Eaters And Teetotalers (part 1)

The purpose of writing this article is an attempt to clarify opinions, about whether it is a sin or social offense to drink wine or strong drinks as explained in the Scriptures of the Hebrew Bible. Personal opinions are multitudinous on the subject and will not be exercised in the discussion subject except to let the reader judge for himself and form an opinion based on an honest selection of statements from the Bible.

It is well known that birds are attracted toward the alcoholic fermentation of berries on vines and trees. Mankind also has been drawn to the alcoholic process of fermentation of fruits and berries transformed into an aromatic liquid, that when drunk will raise man's spirits. These drinks are often called 'Spirits', because they appear to relax the mind from worldly cares and can lift his spirits to ecstatic levels of enjoyment and detachment. The spirits, when drunk to excess, can cause the drinker to be transformed into drunken behavior.

In the year 154 B.C., the Roman historian, Pliny, wrote that the Roman steam baths in the city of Pompeii were so hot and were supplied from the boiling waters of the volcano, Vesuvius. The bathers would sometimes faint into unconsciousness and after recovering would rush out of the steam room "often still naked, to grab a large vessel of wine and drink down its contents, only to vomit it up again so more could be drunk" (XIV 136)

The defense of many protestant religious and ministers of forbidding wine drinking to Christians is the claim that Jesus drank grape juice, not the fermented wine. It is clear from reading the Scriptures in this article that claim is untrue. Many references are given to show that the Bible translators had an understanding that grape juice, grape wine, and raisins are were all separate products of grape and were translated by different words.

All Scriptural references to wine are not negative, nor prohibitive of drinking wine or strong drink. The Old Testament of the Hebrew Bible basically is anti-wine drinking, but some Old Testament Scriptures approve of drinking wine.

"When you arrive, use the money to buy an ox, a sheep, or some strong drink to feast there before the Lord your God, and rejoice with your household." Deuteronomy 14:26

"Well, one thing at least is good: it is for a man to eat well, drink a good glass of wine, accept his position in life, and enjoy his work, whatever his job may be, for however long the Lord may let him live" Ecclesiastes 5:8

"So go ahead, eat, drink, and be merry, for it makes no difference to God!" Ecclesiastes 9:7

Wine was given as a reward by God to tithers (financial supporters) of the Hebrew Temple fund, as stated in Proverbs 3:9 "Overflow your wine vats with the finest wines."

Most Scriptures of the Major Prophet, Isaiah, are negative toward drinking wine except for two Scriptures. This is a bit of evidence for the theory, that there were three Isaiah Prophets whose works were combined into one book.

"Sing and dance and play and feast and drink. Let us drink, eat, and be merry you say: What is the difference, for tomorrow we die" Isaiah 22:13

This particular Scripture from Isaiah may be a prophecy concerning Heavenly feasting and wine drinking in Paradise and the promise of eternal life.

The Lord..."will spread a wondrous feast for everyone around the world...a delicious feast of good food, with clear, well-aged wine, and choice beef...he will swallow up death forever." Isaiah 25:7

Jesus told a parable (story with hidden meanings), that because the Jews would not be willing to give up their embedded religious bias, that in metaphor form, prophecized that the kingdom of Heaven would be taken from the Jews and given to others (Gentiles)

In this parable Jesus told the story of a grape vineyard farmer, who "dug a pit for pressing out the grape juice", and "At grape picking time, he sent" various men including his only son", all of whom were murdered by the vineyard tenants. Jesus suggested that the tenants (Hebrews) who murdered the only son (God's only son, Jesus), the Jews would be cursed and the grape juice vineyard (God's kingdom) would be given by God to others (Gentiles). Mark 12:1

Perhaps, the strongest suggestion in the Hebrew Scriptures, that wine drinking was permissible was given by Jesus, a Jew himself. The first miracle performed by Jesus was turning water into wine.

Jesus, when pressed by his mother, Mary, with a shortage of wine at the wedding feast, changed six barrels of water ? each containing 20 to 30 gallons each into the finest wine. John 2:6

There can be no doubt that Jesus drank wine as revealed in the following Scriptures describing the event known as the Last Supper in the upper room, that today is recreated into the sacrament of Communion at Christian churches.

"After supper he gave them another glass of wine, saying, this wine is taken of God's new agreement to save you." Luke 22:20

"And he (Jesus) took a cup of wine and gave thanks for it and gave it to them and said, Each one (of you) drink from it, for this is my blood, sealing the new covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of multitudes. Mark my words ? I will not drink this wine again until the day I drink it new and with you (disciples) in my Fathers Kingdom." Matthew 26:27

Jesus was criticized by the Pharisees because the disciples of John the Baptist fasted, "Why are you wining and dining?" Jesus answered (Luke 5:37) "No one puts new wine in old wine skins (to store) for the new wine bursts the old wine skins, ruining the wine skins and spilling the wine. New wine must be put into new wine skins. But no one drinking the old wine seems to want the fresh and the new. The old ways are best, they say." Luke 5:33

Jesus said, "But I eat my food and drink my wine, and you say, What a glutton Jesus is! And he drinks! And he has the lowest sort of friends." Luke 7:14

Jesus said, "For John the Baptist doesn't even drink wine and often goes without food; and you will say , He's crazy. And I, the Messiah, feast and drink, and you complain that I am a glutton, and a drinking man, and hang around with the worst sort of sinners." Matthew 11:18

The book of Timothy suggested that wine may be drunk to relieve digestion problems.

"(By the way this doesn't mean you should completely give up wine. You ought to take a little sometimes, as medicine for your stomach because you are sick so often)" 1 Timothy 5:23

Jesus, in one of his famous, I AM, statements in the Gospel of John told his disciples, "Yes, I AM the Vine (grapevine) you are the branches. Whosoever lives in me and I in him shall produce a large crop of fruit. For apart from me you can't do a thing" John 15:5

Italian Wines of a Different Sort

Italy is known for more than a few fine wineries producing epic vintages. There is another vintage, however, that is just as good and deserves a mention of its own.

Italian Wines of a Different Sort

Everyone is aware of champagne - the bubbly that is characteristic of the Champagne region of France. However, many people mislabel all such wines as "champagne", when that is not really the case. There are many different types of bubbly wine, with different varieties coming from such diverse places as Italy, California and Spain. Italian wines of this type are especially unique - their character and flavor is distinctly different from champagne.

These Italian wines, also known as Spumante, have been produced in Italy since the Roman era - long before France ever bottled its first champagne. There are many different varieties within the realm of Italian bubbly wines with some having a drier, crisp taste and others being sweeter and less like the flavor of champagne. Most are produced in the northern regions of Italy, such as Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto.

A big difference between champagne and Italian wines is the way that they are fermented. Champagne is fermented in the bottle, resulting in the bubbly quality it is known for. Spumante wines from Italy, on the other hand, are fermented by a different method known as the Charmat method. In this method, the wine is fermented in a tank for it's second fermentation period (the period that produces bubbles), instead of in its own bottle.

Italian Spumante wines are also often consumed when younger, as the qualities of Italian wines do not hold up as well to aging. The younger consumption age works well with the most common types of Spumante wines, such as Asti. Asti, in earlier times known as a lower-class sweet type of bubbly wine, today is considered to be of much better quality. It pairs well with strong cheeses, such as Gorgonzola. Another variety worth trying is the Franciacorta, the only bubbly wine fermented in the bottle in Italy. Franciacorta is known as the star of Italy's Spumante wines and has smaller bubbles and a milder taste than most of the others. It pairs well with the same foods as champagne - fresh fruit and other milder flavors.

Spumante wines are a great way to experience bubbly alcohol without having to break the bank on expensive, French made champagne. The different varieties also make it easy to find one of these wines that pair well with any sort of entree or hors d' oeuvre. From fish to cheese courses, and even with dessert - bubbly wine is an excellent compliment.

Today's Chianti Region Article

Why choose organic wine?

What could be a better accompaniment to a meal of organic food than a glass of organic wine? Wine is one of humanity's oldest beverages. It's been used in medicine and religious rituals, and it is all over our social calendars. A lot of research has been made to study its effect on human health. Is it a coincidence that the French, who are second in the world in wine consumption, also have the second lowest occurrence of heart disease?

That alone is a good reason to enjoy a glass of wine. But why select an organic wine over one made with conventional methods?

First, as with all organic food, organic wine is produced without any pesticides, herbicides or insecticides. According to some estimates, seventeen such substances are used in conventional wine grape production, making grapes one of the most heavily sprayed crops. After years of spraying the soil, as well as a season of spraying the grapes, the grapes contain contact as well as systemic pesticides. They may not only harm the plants, the soil, and ultimately the environment, but may also be present in the wine as a residue.

Organic farming promotes "biodiversity" and allows other plants to grow in and around the vineyard. Instead of using chemical substances to eliminate weeds, vintners let them grow. In place of herbicides they cultivate the soil and plant cover crops. They use only natural fertilizers, such as composted animal manure, and cultivate beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, to keep the less-welcome ones away.

Grapes are hand picked, which allow only the ripest and healthiest to be used in wine production. An independent body of certification (accredited by the USDA), has to control each winegrower, once or twice a year, to test if he meets the standards for organic farming.

But being "organic" doesn't stop when the grapes are picked. The winemaking process itself is a factor. Organic wineries keep physical treatment of the wine to a minimum level, although the temperature is controlled throughout.

Further, to call a wine "organic," it must not contain added sulfur dioxide, or sulfites. A natural byproduct of the fermentation process, sulfites are essential to prevent oxidation or bacterial spoilage of the wine. While the U.S. Department of Agriculture allows organic wines contain up to 100ppm of sulfites in the final product, many contain less than that; organic red wine, for example, often contains only 40ppm. Conventional winemakers generally add sulfites, and the sulfite levels of their wines will be twice as high.

Organic wines haven't had a good reputation throughout the years, but you'd be surprised at how far they've come. Add a glass of organic wine to that next organic meal, and make it tasty, heart-healthy, and environmentally friendly.

A Guide To Stainless Steel Wine Racks and Metal Iron Wine Racks

Stainless steel wine racks are among the most durable of all wine racks. Purchasing one will virtually guarantee a wine rack that will serve its purpose for years and years to come. When choosing one of these wine racks, you should consider the function the stainless steel wine rack will serve. Is it to be used for wine storage primarily or is it going to be used as a mean of display? Of course, these two functions are not mutually exclusive either; artful tastes can be integrated into functionality these days in many quality wine racks.

Another thing to consider should be your budget. Stainless steel wine racks are more moderately priced than wrought iron wine racks, for example, although the latter have become very popular as well.

A third point to consider is the amount of available room. A person with limited space should only look for metal racks that hold two or three bottles and kept on the counter. Another person might be looking for a instant cellar. Determine the amount of room available for the stainless steel wine racks or metal iron wine racks before you begin shopping. This will save you time and disappointment, when you find the perfect rack but it is too big.

Stainless steel wine racks are made of metal and because metal is so malleable, it is often twisted into sculptures or designs unobtainable by traditional wood wine racks. These designs are then forged at high heats so the wine rack's metal is almost indestructible. It requires minimal cleaning -- just soap and water -- and can be polished or dulled depending on owners' desires.

Although they can be used for wine bottle storage, metal iron wine racks are not as adaptable or space saving as wood wine racks. Metal iron wine racks are functional, but better serve as a unique component to any entertaining event. Since many metal iron wine racks are artistic in design, they make great conversation pieces. Thus, many metal wine racks -- whether stainless steel or iron -- are kept on the counter or displayed prominently around the home for visual appreciation and pleasure.

All metal wine racks are going to last for many years. It is important to take into consideration the purpose of the wine rack before purchasing one. For example, a small metal wine rack is not going to fufill your needs if you want to grow a wine collection over the years -- for this kind of endeavor, you should look into wooden wine racks that are stackable. You want the best fit for your money and who wants to spend more money for another wine rack in the near future because the original wine rack doesn't fit anymore bottles, or was an impulse buy that no longer fits the d?cor.

Wine 101

I am sure that there are many people who will say that they know everything there is to know about wines. Unfortunately unless you are a wine aficionado, a wine grower or an expert in wine tasting you will have a very limited idea of the many differences that are present in
wines. This is quite alright as many of us just drink the various wines that we have without thinking any further. To help us learn more about wines we can take a small tour called wine 101.

This tour will just touch on a few ideas in wines. To get more information you can visit wineries and ask questions from their tour guides, look for the information that you require on the internet, read some books on wine tasting and other subjects. These are just
introductions into the many differences that you will find as you ample different wines.

In wine 101 the first thing that you will have to understand is that red wines have a different taste from white wines and you will need to taste these to learn the various differences. Once you have accepted this fact you will need to look for a few white wines and red wines in which to conduct your wine 101 class.

The next step in the tasting of the wine 101 is to pour some wine into a glass. Swirl the wine in the glass so that the wine and all of the substances in the wine have a chance to meld. You will need to hold the wine up to the light and see how long it takes for the leg of the wine to pour back into the bottom of the glass. The legs of the wine will tell you about the quality of the wine.

The next stage in wine 101 is to smell the wine. Here you will need to first take a quick sniff. From this sniff you should try and identify the various flavors that may be present in the wine. Once you have decided what these flavors might be, you should swirl the wine once more so that everything is once again thoroughly mixed together.

You must be prepared to step into the next part of wine 101. This is where you will take a small sip of the wine, hold it for a few minutes and savor all of the flavors. When these flavors are present in your mouth the wine should be allowed to slide into your waiting throat. Now savor the full taste of your glass of wine.

Alcohol Hierarchy: The Order of Wine

As you embark on a wine tasting, you may require a variety of things: bottles of wine, a cork screw, wine glasses, a wine tasting kit, perhaps even an English accent. While this stuff may be essential, unless you know the hierarchy of the wines, they become useless.

When it comes to order of wine, it?s easy to get ahead of yourself. As bottles line the shelves, the labels coiled around their bodies like curled fingers calling you over, it takes some self discipline to not dive in too quickly, no matter how much you are drooling. Patience, when it comes to tasting wine, is more than a virtue: it?s the law.

Proper wine tasting demands that wine be consumed in a specific order. Drinking incorrectly won?t only change the way wine tastes, but it will change your perception of it: if consumed in the wrong order, you may unfairly judge a wine, spitting out your drink and cursing the bottle because its taste is altered. When a wine is tasted in the wrong order, it doesn?t stand a chance; its taste and reputation become inferior: it practically becomes light beer.

Wines that are heavy and full bodied can overpower the lighter wines, leaving the lighter wines to taste differently than they really do. For this reason, lighter wines should be tasted first. However, this can be tricky when you don?t know what a wine tastes like. It?s hard to know which ones are light and which ones are heavy: a scale is of no help and if you simply ask the wines about their mass, they will probably just lie about their weight. This is when the other senses must step in.

Using the senses of sight, smell, and - if you?re lucky enough to have it - ESP, you can usually gauge whether a wine is light or heavy. Lighter wines are dense and tend to leave thick streaks inside the glass when swirled. Heavy wines are deeper in color and their odor is more intense.

After you have predicted whether a wine is light or heavy to the best of your ability, put the wines in an order where you will consume the lighter wines first and the heavier wines second. On occasion a defective wine may find its way into your tasting. These wines may smell of rotten egg or cork and should be tasted last, if at all.

Once the lighter wines are separated from the heavier wines, the order of the wine gets a little more complex. Sparkling wines, such as champagne, have the honor of being in the front: they are the wines that have called shotgun. Next, light whites wines, such as Albari?o, should be consumed. These are followed by heavier whites. A full bodied Chardonnay fits into this category.

After whites have all been tasted, it?s time to switch colors. The change is gradual at first as rose wine comes to the table. These wines are pink in color and may be known as ?blush,? ?Rosado?, or ?Rosata.? Light reds , such as a Bardolino, and heavy reds, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon, respectively follow.

Once you?ve got the order of your wines down, the rest of the wine tasting process is simple. You just need to get a few bottles of wine, a cork screw, wine glasses, and a wine tasting kit. Some wine tasting kits may even include all the aforementioned supplies. But, even for these kits, English accents are sold separately.
