Exploring The Flavours Of Wine

Although the four main flavors - sweet, salty, sour, and bitter are all your tongue is really capable of tasting, the long lasting impression that wine leaves in your mouth is far more complex. When you drink or taste wine, your taste buds and your sense of smell are involved, adding to the way you interpret wine overall. The flavors, aromas, and sensations that wine is comprised of provide the interaction that you taste when you sample wine.

Sweetness is something that wines are well known for. With most types of wine, grapes are responsible for the sweet taste. Grapes contain a lot of sugar, which breaks the yeast down into alcohol. The grapes and yeast that were used to produce the wine will leave behind various sugars, which your tongue will be able to quickly detect. Once your tongue detects these various sugars, the stimulation of sweetness from the wine will be ever so present in your mouth.

Alcohol is also present in wine, although your tongue does not really know how to decipher the taste of alcohol. Even though the tongue does not really taste alcohol, the alcohol is present in the mouth. The alcohol found in wine will dilate blood vessels and therefore intensify all of the other flavors found in the wine. After you have samples a few types of wine, the alcohol level can easily have an effect on your taste buds, making it hard to distinguish other drinks that you may have.

Another flavor is acidity, which will effect the sugars. With the proper balance of acidity, the overall flavor of wine can be very overwhelming. Once you taste wine that contains it, the flavor of the acidity will be well known to your tongue. Although acidity is great with wine, too much of it will leave a very sharp taste. With the right levels, acidity will bring the flavors of the grape and fruits alive in your mouth - providing you with the perfect taste.

Yet another effect of flavor are tannins, which are the proteins found in the skins of grapes and other fruits. If a wine has the right amount of tannins, it will give your tongue a great feel, and bring in the sensations of the other flavors. Once a wine starts to age, the tannins will begin to breakdown in the bottle, giving you a softer feel to the taste. Tannins are essential for the taste of wine - providing the wine has been properly aged.

The last flavor associated with wine is oak. Although oak is not put into the wine during the manufacturing process, it is actually transferred during the aging process, as most wines will spend quite a bit of time in oak barrels. Depending on how long the wine is left in the oak barrel or cask, the ability to extract the flavor will vary. Most often times, wine will be aged just enough to where the oak taste is visibly there - and adds the perfect sentiment to the taste.

Although there are other flavors involved with the taste of wine, they are not as present as those listed above. The above flavors are the most present in wine, and also the flavors that you need to get more familiar with. Before you try to taste wine or distinguish flavors, you should always learn as much you can about the components responsible for the flavors. This way - you will know more about what you are tasting and you will truly be able to appreciate wine.

And from all the Frenchmen, Mr Chirac proved to be a bon viveur having a huge appetite for the finer things of life. As the BBC's Emma Jane Kirby reports from Paris it seems that as mayor of Paris, Mr Chirac was a frequent host of lavish parties while his wife used to spend more than a couple of pounds per day on their personal food and drink alone.

Even now when Mr Chirac is no longer the mayer his taste for good wine brings a big benefit to the city hall. Bertrand Delanoe who is now the mayor of Paris discovered some bottles of wine being held in the city hall's cellar since Chirac's seat. It seem that the wine bottles had increased so much in value they were deemed too extravagant to be served by the Paris city hall. The Socialist mayer decided to organise an auction to sell the valuable bottles. The wine has attracted bidders from around the world.

The most appreciated wine were two bottles of Romanee Conti 1986. The plot called Roman?e-Conti situated in Burgundy has at first glance nothing extraordinary with its ground containing a very fine clay which does not exist in the neighbouring plots. But the natural draining is perfect. The plot Roman?e-Conti was traced during the XVth century, and maybe earliest in the XIIth century by the monks of Saint-Viviant. The result is a subtile equation between grape, soil, climate, orientation and watering. "We are the keeper of a certain philosophy of wine and, mainly, we are concern by the perfection in details" assures Aubert de Vilaine, one of the owners of the place with the Leroys. Usually a potential client must aqcuire the wines of the domains by boxes of twelve, which means one bottle of Roman?e-Conti among 11 bottles of other domains. A box of twelve bottles is worth about 3,000 Euros. But the two bottles of Romanee Conti 1986 have been sold for 5,000-euro each.

Other attractions of the auction have been the of Chateau Petrus Bordeaux priced at 1,200 euros each. P?trus is a wine of the Pomerol wine region in Bordeaux made almost entirely from the Merlot grape. The ch?teau belongs to the family of the Libourne wine merchant Moueix. Although the wines of Pomerol have never been classified, P?trus is now considered among the best of Bordeaux. Ch?teau P?trus produces approximately 3,000 cases of wine in an average year. Grapes are hand harvested and fermented in cement tanks, then aged for two years in new oak before bottling. Newly released bottles are typically offered for more than 400 euros as futures, with mature examples often fetching more than 800 euros.

The budget of the Paris city hall was raised by the auction and can be incresed as the French news website LCI says the bottles on sale amount to three-quarters of the city hall's collection.

Cost. Naturally, you have to consider the price of joining such a club. Remember that the membership fee is not the only cost to consider. Usually, you need to factor in the shipping fees and taxes.

Variety. Before you sign up with an online wine club, be sure that they have variety of the wine sources. Make sure their wines coming from several vineyards, and not just one.

Shipment policies. Most online wine clubs adhere to all federal, state and local laws on shipment, but beware; there are other clubs that circumvent shipping laws to decrease taxes, etc. Other wine retailers, online or otherwise can ship to certain states and deliver products even without a signature of an adult. Twelve states prohibit retailers from shipping the wines directly to the consumers. These include Arkansas, Georgia, Alaska, Kansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Maryland, South Dakota, Tennessee and Utah, among others. Some online wine clubs do not deliver to certain states even when wine delivery is allowed because the market is too small. Be sure to clarify if the club delivers to where you are located before signing up for membership.

Inventory policies. There are also laws that govern how retailers manage their inventory in various states. In some cases, it is illegal for retailers to move their wines from one state to another state. Some states have signed mutually beneficial agreements enabling retailers to deliver wines to consumers between states. Ask the online wine club customer representatives about how these inventory policies may affect you.
